TECH:XOLO announces Intel Atom Z240-powered X1000 for Rs 19,999

After days of teasing, XOLO has finally made official its next smartphone powered by an Intel CPU. The X1000 was unveiled in Goa and has hit online stores for Rs 19,999.

Contrary to our suspicions, the X1000 does not have the newly-announced Clover Trail+ series of CPUs. Instead XOLO has decided to go with Intel Atom Z240 CPU, clocked at 2GHz and which comes with Intel’s Hyper Threading technology for faster performance. The phone has a PowerVR SGX540 GPU with a clock speed of 400MHz and there’s 1GB of RAM as well. We can’t wait to put this processor through its paces.

The X1000 has a 4.7-inch, 720p display and an 8-megapixel camera

Software-wise, the X1000 will ship with Android 4.0.4, which is a bitter disappointment as 4.1 Jelly Bean would have greatly improved the performance of the phone and would have given users the goodness of Google Now. However, we should see a fairly stock UI experience with minor customisations. In any case, the Intel processor should ideally smooth out any creases in the user experience.

The phone is designed using a unibody construction technique and the back of the device features a special Black Silver colour with what XOLO calls a "luxuriant finish". The 4.7-inch display and a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution translate to a pixel density of around 312 ppi. The display type is TFT LCD, most likely manufactured by Japan Display Inc. There's a 2.5D effect created by the edge-to-edge curved glass. Internal storage is 8GB with space for expansion up to 32GB through microSD cards.

There’s an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of 1080p video recording. The camera comes with different modes such as Sports, Portrait, Night mode and Fireworks, which automatically adjust settings to present users with the best camera settings. Burst mode support has also been included. The camera comes with touch focus enabled and there’s an LED flash to help in low-light situations. On the front, there’s a 1.3-megapixel camera, which should be enough for self-shots and video calls. There is support for HSPA+ networks, so download speed is capped off at 21Mbps and upload speed is limited to 5.7Mbps.

Interestingly, the X1000 is packed with sensors to improve the user experience. There’s an Ambient Light Sensor, a Magnetometer, an Accelerometer, a Proximity Sensor and a Gyroscope – an impressive collection indeed.

Here are the key specs of the XOLO X1000 once again:

*4.7-inch TFT LCD with a resolution of 1280 x 720
*HSPA+, GPRS/EDGE
*Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Wi-Fi hotspot
*Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR
*GPS with A-GPS support
*8-megapixel primary camera with LED flash and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera
*8GB of internal storage with microSD card slot (up to 32GB)

Worryingly, there’s only a 1900 mAh battery included with the phone, which is good enough for most processors but could come up short when teamed with the power-hungry Intel Z240 processor.

GAMES:Sony to release PlayStation 4 this year for around $430!!!

Tokyo: Sony Corp plans to release its new PlayStation 4 home console this year for around $430, giving the successor to the popular PS3 a touch panel control and easy access to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, Japan's Asahi newspaper reported.
Sony's game chief, Andrew House, will reveal the new features at a PlayStation meeting in New York on February 20, the paper said, without saying where it obtained the information.
Sony declined to comment on the report. The gathering in New York is the first major PlayStation meeting in two years. The last time Sony held such an event it revealed the prototype for its handheld Vita. The meeting before that in 2005 came two months after it revealed its concept for the PS3, which sold 70 million units.
It has been more than six years since Sony launched the PS3, a longer gap than between the PS3 and its PS2 predecessor. The gaming market has since been transformed by the rise of tablet PCs and smartphones that are wooing away casual gamers with free or cheap games.
The shift to mobile devices has forced console makers such as Sony, Nintendo Co Ltd and Microsoft Corp to try to find new ways to win back consumers to consoles.
In a sign of the competitive pressure they face, Nintendo last month cut its sales target for the Wii U, successor to its 100 million-selling Wii, to 4 million machines by the end of March from its launch in November, compared with an earlier forecast for 5.5 million.
Shares in Sony, which is due to release its third-quarter results later in the day, last traded up 4.0 per cent at 1,540 yen, in a broader market down nearly 1.0 per cent.

Apple pips Samsung, becomes largest mobile phone vendor in US

Apple overtook Samsung to become the largest mobile phone vendor in the US in the fourth quarter of 2012, a report said on Friday.

In its latest report, research firm Strategy Analytics estimated that Apple shipped 17.7 million mobile phones in the US for a record 34 percent share of the market in the fourth quarter of 2012, making the tech giant the No.1 mobile phone vendor by volume in the US for the first time ever.

Samsung, Apple's arch-rival, shipped 16.8 million handsets for a 32 percent market share in the country, reported Xinhua.

The report said Apple's success has been driven by its popular ecosystem of iPhones and App Store, generous carrier subsidies and extensive marketing around the new iPhone 5 model.

However, Apple's hard-won victory is expected to be short-lived. Samsung had been the No.1 mobile phone vendor in the US since 2008 and it will surely be keen to recapture the title this year by launching improved new models such as the rumored Galaxy S4, Strategy Analytics said.

Meanwhile, the report pointed out that despite a solid fourth-quarter performance, the US mobile phone market had contracted for the first three quarters of 2012, making annual mobile phone shipments fall by 11 percent in 2012 from the year of 2011.
